The Dozen

12) E.T. - No movie collection, science fiction or otherwise, can be complete without this classic. This masterfully directed film explores the antics of a timid extra-terrestrial as he learns about the world he is stranded on and bonds with the children he meets there.

11) District 9- This thrilling movie takes place in the midst of the first alien contact with the human race. The alien’s, with their leader apparently dead, become stranded on earth. This story raises challenging questions about the human race and the actions we take.

10) Lord of the Rings- The classic tale of good vs. evil is one that every person must see. For people who just desire swordfights and massive battles there are plenty to be found in this epic trilogy. For the viewer who desires thoughtful and intelligent plotlines, this series is filled with subtle and intelligent subplots going on the in the background.

9) Wolf’s Rain- An intriguing tale shows the struggle of a group of wolves forced to masquerade as humans to escape the destructions of their species. The intelligent and gripping storyline pulls you in and does not let go. The small group of heroes contains characters as different from each other as one could find, but they all must work together to survive the apocalypse and escape to the mystical place known only as Paradise.

8) I Robot – Though it features a fairly jaded plotline of robots getting too smart and taking over, this movie is still a fantastic story due the original method of telling it, the fantastic special effects, and the superb acting. This story follows a detective who sets out to discover the truth about the robots and, along with a robot that seems to have developed emotions, faces off against armies of super-powered foes. The visuals of this movie are simply amazing and Will Smith, whom I consider one of the greatest current actors, executes his role perfectly.

7) Bleach – Perhaps the most drawn out and over marketed anime currently on the global market, Bleach nonetheless makes my list because of the thrilling storyline hidden somewhere within the sea of irritating arcs and diversions meant to add length to the plot. Viewers follow a teenage human named Ichigo whom accepts the powers of a Death God to protect his family. This series raises questions about how far one will go to protect their family and the corruption of a man by power.

6) Independence Day ¬– Never has the battle between humans and aliens been so intense. In a wake of an alien invasion, a small group of very different heroes, ranging from a perpetually drunk pilot to the president of the U.S.A., must unite to become humanities best and only hope for survival. The effects are brilliant, the acting superb, and the subplots immensely interesting. When viewed with an open mind, one can see the question raised by the story, about the human parasitism of the world.

5) Harry Potter ¬- This engaging series follows the life of young wizard named Harry Potter, the sole survivor of a vicious cult determined to wipeout all humans not considered “purebloods”. As the story progresses Harry Potter must deal with the Ku Klux Klan… erm… I mean the Death Eaters gaining power once more. Racism is a primary theme of this series, and becomes more prevalent as the movies mature and darken towards the end of the series.

4) Avatar – While it is true that the storyline is more or less stolen from “Pocahontas” and “Dances with Wolves”, it has never been executed with such visual perfection as in this movie. The story follows the life of a marine sent to live with natives of an alien planet. His job is to convince them to leave their home for the sake of human profit. As time passes he begins to realize he disagrees with the actions of his own race and begins an epic war to save his adopted species and home from the vicious human race. This movie brings to mind the question of how far we as a race will go for profit.

3) Batman – The caped crusader has entertained children, teens, and young adults for decades. The recent movies, following the beginning of Batman and his first adventures, have been among the greatest movies of our time. The mind of Bruce Wayne is an incredibly interesting place, and that plays out in the movies. Batman facing off with armies of foes is an awesome sight, and his desperation to stick to his morals makes his every action intensely interesting.

2) V for Vendetta ¬– In not so distant or impossible time, a disillusioned hero sets out to take out a vicious government, driven only by revenge. As time passes our protagonist, known only as V, bonds with a beautiful woman he saves while out on a mission. His eyes begin to open to a driving force far greater than revenge. The epic fights, thoughtful storyline, and character growth make this movie a must for all.

1) Death Note- When a teenage genius gains access to the Death Note he gains the ability to kill anybody in the world just by knowing his or her name and face. With this power Light Yagami, known to the world as Kira, secretly determines to become a Death God and begins killing all “evil” people. As the story progresses great detectives begin searching for the identity of Kira, and the viewers are forced to choice sides. Do they side with the ruthless Kira, who will kill anyone who gets in his way but strives for a future without evil, or the numerous detectives seeking his identity and his ultimate demise. While fulfilling his mission Kira meets many who wholeheartedly support his actions and many who viciously oppose them. The deeper in the series one gets the more the questions pile up. The boundaries of right and wrong are shorn bare in this thoughtful and action-packed anime. The intense power of this series place it right at the top of my list.

My Big Sc-Fi Blog Introduction

If you have stumbled across this blog I apologize. I now own your soul. That being so over the next few months you'll be exposed to my opinions, interpretations, and general ramblings regarding the book and novels that I shall explore in this class. I hope to question the way books are written and raise ideas in your mind that may not be at first evident. I'm looking forward to a mindbending semester and will be dragging your captured soul (willing or otherwise) along for the ride.
